Copenhagen Cozenage, Book Review: Confessions of a Non-Romance Dude

I have two confessions to make.

First, I had to look up “cozenage”.  I had no idea what it meant.  It’s actually a cool little word that means, basically, a con (subterfuge, deception, trickery, usually with a little class and subtlety - think “used car salesman” but not quite “Congress”).

Second, romance novels aren’t my thing.  Not that I have a huge problem with the industry, but I usually find them sappy, silly and sloppy.  Or at least, I’m pretty sure I would if I read any of them… besides this one.

So now that I’m done confessing, let me get down to it.  I read a book called Copenhagen Cozenage and I’m writing a book review of it.  I usually don’t do that, but hey, this book was a lot of firsts for me (see confessions above) so I’m just gonna drop this on y’all.  As I do, let me be succinct:

I like this book.

Sure, romance novels may not be my thing, but if more of them were like this they might be.  The book was a freshman work by author Kristen Joy Wilks, a name you might not know but might do well to remember.  She writes well with a light, lively, genuine and very approachable style.  Her voice is a good one.  She uses plenty of description and color but is not overwhelming.  The prose flows nicely in the first person and stays true to character throughout.  A cornerstone of this character is a dry, insightful and self-deprecating wit.  Even in the most painful and darkest corners of her trials, Morgan (the protagonist) keeps things light and funny.  I felt safe in the hands of her personality throughout.  It was a nice place to be.  She made me laugh.

While the writing was solid, the story itself was what I found… well… romantic.  But not in a sappy, silly, sloppy way - more in a surprising, intriguing, face-punching, mystery-at-every-turn, “I didn’t know you could write that and call it a romance novel” kind of way.  Yeah, sure there was kissing and heart palpitations and daydreaming about that handsome guy, but there was also comedy, adventure, suspense, intrigue, breaking bones, big slobbery lovable dogs, faith, punching, tackling, disguises, people being locked in a cellar and threatened with torture and death, knockouts, secret backstories, bleeding, surprise revelations and smacking people over the head with stuff.  And more.  It was sort of a Romancing the Stone meets Beethoven meets True Lies.  Wrap your head around that one.

As a total gamer geek, I was also delighted to see a ton of references to all things nerd, such as RPG’s, sci-fi/fantasy flicks and the like.  And it wasn’t just passing references, either, like the kind some grasping author would look up on the Internet to fulfill an editor’s whim - this was full-on insider talk, the sort that you can’t fake and that smacks of authenticity as sure as a black t-shirt and a bag full of twenty different dice.  At the risk of hitting too close to home, the book smelled like a gaming convention.

On a personal note, I also loved the Christian tone of Copenhagen Cozenage.  Today’s fiction often panders to the baser instincts of our culture and character, which is a sad comment on our society and honestly just how far we’ve let ourselves stray from true storytelling.  This novel was a breath of fresh air.  While we all have a human side that is lured by base content, we also possess a more lofty sliver of soul that aspires to a something more pure - a sliver that delights in passionate love instead of passionate sex, self-sacrifice instead of selfish lust and calling out to God instead of calling out curses.  This book has that.  It made me feel good.

So to recap:  if you’re looking for a fun, funny, nerdy, suspenseful, mystery-romance-action novel with a modern quirky twist, a big lovable slobbery dog, slapstick humor and a punch of passionate Christian wholesomeness, this one’s for you.

And that’s not cozenage.

(Check it out on Amazon and other places around the Web.  Romance rules!  Did I say that?!)

Write Makes Might Promo Video

It's here, it's here!  The OFFICIAL "Write Makes Might" Promo video!  HUGE thanks to Rob Culp over at Little Fish Productions.  He's a master storyteller and really a big bag of fun to work with.  Great guy.

Also big thanks to principal Tavis Peterson and the students and staff at Adams Elementary of Wapato and Camas Elementary of Wapato.  Your dedication to writing and letting me run around and throw stuff at you was, frankly, inspiring.

Please feel free to spread this around to any educators, para-educators or would-be educators you know.  I love to do the assemblies and they're really a big boost to writing programs (not to mention more fun than Cheese Zombie Day in the cafeteria).  Check out the School Visits Page for more details, if you want 'em.

Say it with me now... Write Makes Might!!

Camas Elementary of Wapato - Write Makes Might!

The Word Warrior and his battle-ready crew.  They totally raided my props. :)
How was it?!  I'll tell you how it was...

It was LOUD!
It was CRAZY!
It was ACTION-PACKED!

It was also well-behaved, eloquent, had great listening skills and showed off a ton of positive participation and writing ability.

It was Camas Elementary, the Write Makes Might assembly!

This school was fab fun.  Had some great words and vocabulary, lots of energy, especially for an end-of the day gig, and above all some top-notch staff.  Mr. Salazar rocked the AV and introductions and the Principal, Maria, totally floored me with what has now become one of my favorite presentation moments.  Earlier in the day her counterpart at Adams Elementary, Tavis, had asked "Is everything ready? Did I get it all set up like you asked?"  To which I replied "Yes, Tavis... all except for the bag of blue M&M's."  He played along nicely.  We shared a chuckle.  We parted.  Then Tavis went to his office and called Maria.  She dashed out, grabbed a bag of M&M's and had all the blue ones sorted out by the time I started my afternoon assembly at her school.  Just as I was starting, she popped up to the front and made the presentation.

It was totally awesome.

Thanks for the blue M&M's, Maria!  Now I R a rockstar!
Not only do I now feel like a bonafide rockstar, but I'm going to add "bag of blue M&M's" permanently to my list of required assembly materials.  Hey, what can I say?  Once you get a taste of fame, there's no going back.

And, as usual, below is the entire text for the amazing story the kids created.  This is for YOU, students of Camas Elementary!  Write on!!

Jeff the Janitor Cleans House
Once there was a little frog named Jeff who lived in a pond. He got sucked into the sewer and ended up in Camas Elementary school. The frog was wandering around and found a mug on Mr. Salazar's desk. The mug had something green in it. Jeff drank it. It tasted like seaweed. Then he mutated into a janitor.
“That was gross!” Jeff croaked. “Let's go clean something!”
One day an evil snake named Ssindy tried to take over the world. Ssindy using an evil smoke. When you smelled the smoke it turned you into a snake. Jeff decided to make an army of frogs using the same drink that turned him into a janitor. The snake army met the frog janitor army in battle. The snakes got slimed by the frogs' super bazookas.
      “Noooooooooo...” hissed Ssindy.
Jeff the Janitor won the day!

Adams Elementary of Wapato - Write Makes Might!

The Word Warrior prepares students for combat by handing over a public restroom.
Another great show!  Huge thanks to the administrators, staff and students at Wapato's own Adams Elementary for hosting my Write Makes Might assembly, especially principal Tavis Peterson.  He was great, kids were great, participation was great, story was great... in short, it was great.  They also have more great stuff than just assemblies going on.  Adams Elementary is totally committed to the writing process and are doing some amazing things with showcasing student work, rubrics and other cool educational terms that I only understand in a very basic and non-educator-like way.  Basically, it's great.  One of the teachers typed the final story into Google Docs during the assembly and took her kids straight back to class to continue working on it as an assignment.  Now that's innovation.  Go Adams!  Write Makes Might!!

On a side note, my Sgt. Vocab mustache stayed on the whole time, I only ate about nine hairs from the Word Warrior wig (a big improvement) and videographer Rob Culp from Little Fish Productions (pictured below on the far right background desperately trying to follow the action with his camera) was able to nail some choice footage for the upcoming Write Makes Might promo video.  Go Rob!

Sgt. Vocab gathers ammo for the Word War.  Careful - that thing is loaded!

As usual, I also include here the full text of the story written by the students during the assembly's grand finale.  Way to go, guys!  This one's for you!

The Oink Heard 'Round the World

A long time ago in a farm far far way lived a pig. The farm was run by an evil farmer named Dr. Farmer. Dr. Farmer experimented on the pig and turned him into a super pig named Oink Oink. Oink Oink flew around helping people. He helped old ladies cross the street. He caught someone falling off a roof. Then one day Dr. Farmer got hungry. But Dr. Farmer's daughter loved Oink Oink. She warned him he was in trouble.
“Watch out!” she cried. “My father is coming!”
When Dr. Farmer came to make bacon, Oink Oink let loose his secret weapon... the Super Oink!!! Dr. Farmer was defeated and Oink Oink was saved. The Evil Dr. Farmer had met his match!

Stuff I've Learned From the Avengers Part 2: Iron Man - You're Only as Good as Your Armor

And THAT, folks, is some AWESOME armor.  They don't call it "Hulkbuster" for nuttin'...

Continuing this series in honor of The Avengers:  Age of Ultron, let's take a peek at the group's frontman and see what we can learn - billionaire philanthropist and occasional egomaniac Tony Stark.

To learn any lessons from Iron Man, that's exactly where you need to look - not at the tin suit, but at the man underneath.  This super is a great illustration for all of us: when it comes right down to it, we're all pretty soft and squishy.  Vulnerable.  Bendable.  Breakable.  Bleedable (I made that one up).  In short, "human".

Problem is, life comes at us as hard and fast as a dozen Ultrons on any given day, with pressure, stress, temptation, fear, anxiety, pimples, bad choices, bad gas, bad credit and bad weather.  We just don't know what's gonna hit us next.  The GOOD news is... well.. the Good News.

We are not alone.  We got armor.

In Ephesians 6:10-12, God tells us what to do to stand up to life and all the threats and dangers it can dish out.  Put on our armor.  Slap on the Truth, buckle on Righteousness and clamp down Faith all around us.  Even more, we're encouraged to go on the warpath.  With a sword.  Dang.  I want me some of that.  That's something even Tony Stark doesn't have.  Iron Man with a big flippin' sword?!  Now you're talking.

The plain fact is that we're only as good as our armor.  And if we put on that armor, then nothing can stop us.  Not even life.

So put it on.  That's not a suggestion.

Stuff I've Learned From the Avengers Part 1: The Hulk - You've Got the POWER!

Say it with me... "Avengers... assemble!"  C'mon, you know you wanna...
In honor of the Avengers: Age of Ultron, I've assembled (ugh, sorry) some of the many critical lessons I've learned from these superheroic fellas (and one lady).  Let's start with Big Green.
The lesson from the Hulk is POWER.  Pure, raw, earth-shattering, unstoppable and downright incredible.  Know what?  You've got the same power.  YOU are Bruce Banner.  Just like him, that power is not your own.  It comes from another source.  For Bruce, it's the little green Gamma dudes swimming around in his blood.  For you, it's something more.  Something bigger.  It's God.  In 2 Timothy 1:7 the Almighty drops a big one on us - we have POWER.  Massive power.
Feel weak?  You are.  Want power?  You got it.  Just tap into what God has to offer.  Dig into His talk, figure out what He wants and how He works.  Wrap your life around it.  Give into it, just like Dr. Dave.  Unleash the beast.  You'll see some amazing, incredible, powerful, potent things that will blow you away.  Guaranteed.
Does all that power scare you?  It shouldn't.  It's a rush.  That's the way life was meant to be.
But when you unleash it, just make sure you hold onto your purple pants.  It's gonna be quite a ride.

Summitview Elementary - Write Makes Might!

Huge thanks to the students and staff at Summitview Elementary in Yakima, Washington for hosting my Write Makes Might! assembly last Friday!  It was awesome!

This event marked the debut of two new characters, the brash, bold and dedicated word guy Sgt. Vocab and everybody's favorite crazy scientiest Professor Pondorium.  Both were a big hit, thanks to the kids and their boundless, incredible enthusiasm.

My favorite part was when Sgt. Vocab's mustache fell off.  He quickly explained it was due to an "unfortunate mustache-related injury back in the war" and tossed it out into the crowd as a souvenir.  Some lucky parents who watched that one come home!  It also led to a rare mustache-handing-out-ceremony after the assembly.  A group of kids rushed up for autographs and when the paper ran out, I just handed out mustaches.  That was a first, I guarantee.  But knowing Write Makes Might, probably not a last.

The kid story we all wrote together was another great one, "The Adventures of Monkey Man and Banana Boy".  Anyone from Summitview who didn't get a copy can just contact me and I'll email you one.

Tons of thanks to teachers and kids once again.  You guys are the reason I do this.  Amazing words, great participation, incredible ideas and another unforgettable experience.

Go write!

Northwest Community Church Hunts Monsters

Spent the weekend with Northwest Community Church Youth Group speaking at their Winter Camp retreat.  The topic was Jesus Christ Monster Hunter.

What can I say about it?

Hmm...

GOD SHOUTED.

That's the best way I can think of to explain it.  I have worked with a lot of churchy people, but this group... man.  They really know what it means to lay it all down and pick up whatever Jesus offers.  We laughed, we shared, we cried, we hurt, we healed, we offered up the deep dark fears and monsters of our lives and vowed before God to help each other smack 'em down.  Even me.  That's right.  They even pulled me into it.

Our Saturday Night Smash circle-n-prayer time went over three hours.  We smashed the heck out of some Monster cans, lifted each other up in prayer and praise, lived out loud, laughed out loud, sang and sobbed.  If you've never let God work you over like that, it's a rush.  Seek it out.  We were a family engaged in what God wants families to do - help each other out.

HUGE kudos to the Michael Moody, Erin and Elisa Peabody and all the other leaders who helped make this thing go.  There was a lot of faith and many years behind it.

HUGER kudos to the kids who bared their souls, lifted their hands and wore their hearts on their sleeves to get past the lies the world is selling - that we're alone and unloved and helpless.  We hunted some monsters that night, that's for darn sure.  Jesus Christ... thank you.  Couldn't have done it without you.

Remember, folks, as you set out from this day - build a monster hunting team.  Share your life with others, build each other up, watch each other's backs.  And above all, know your Savior, the Master Hunter.  Do you want the Chuck Norris Jesus or the Stevie Wonder Jesus?  Know him, follow him, sell out to him.

Those monsters will never stand a chance again.

Keynoting at Wapato School District's Dinner and a Book

Thank You Wapato SD!

Huge thanks to the folks at Wapato School District in Central Washington for having me speak at their first Dinner and a Book family event!  It was a great dinner, great audience and great show.  Some fabulous young readers helped out and shared their amazing reading adventures afterward.  I ran through a small portion of the usual high-energy school assembly "Write Makes Might" and got to wear the Arnold Schwarzenneger barbarian wig, which is one of my personal favorites (see picture below).

If you're wondering what I look like with hair, this is it.  Well, at least if you're wondering what I look like with really long black nasty hair.  I do a bit about "the Word Warrior" and the power of words with an Arnold Schwarzenneger accent, just in case you're wondering.  I usually talk like that for about 3 days afterwards.  It's addicting.  So is wearing the full armor:

Giant thanks to all the kids of Wapato School District and to Mike Balmelli for getting me involved.  Go Wapato!

"Parts" (Graveyard Shift Book 3) Cover Reveal!

It's here!

Feast your eyes on the uber cool, retro Hollywood, campy 1950's B-movie classic horror flick book cover for "Parts:  Graveyard Shift, the Adventures of Carson Dudley Book 3"!

Big props, kudos and mighty grats to longtime artist and friend Chris Caprile for his tireless work, vision and stamina in putting up with my frequent suggestions and nit-pickings.  He does a fabulous job and, as usual, really captured exactly what was in my brain.  Which, all by itself, is a pretty scary thought.  Thanks, brother!

The book will have this same old-school, mad science, creepy feeling, like those cliffhanger horror movies of the 1950's.  Hey, it's even in black and white!  So soak up the nostalgic monster fever of this classic cover and get ready for the Kickstarter release of "Parts" this Friday, October 17th!

Just for fun, I also included some of the earlier prototypes and drafts of various versions of the cover so you can see the evolution of the art... including my initial high quality pencil sketch on a memo pad in the Starbucks where we were meeting.  Totally classy.  So take a walk down the page and see how all the wonder and creation happens.  Challenge yourself to see if you can pick out the subtle (and not-so-subtle) changes between each of the versions.

And in the meantime, hug a mad scientist.  They're people too.

My original sketch on hotel memo pad.  Looking at this now, I'm not sure why I even pay Caprile.  I R GUD DRAWR!

An early pencil sketch by Chris.  Caprile, that is.

An approved and nearly finalized sketch with the ink wash added.

Almost finished!  Full color and book title info added, but still a few tweaks to go.  See if you can spot 'em below...

Tada!!! The final (or at least really really close) cover!

Inklings Author Fair

Now this is the stuff I absolutely LOVE!!  Getting up close and personal with the most important part of any author's life:  the READERS!  Check out some of the fun at the Inklings Author Fair in Yakima, WA.  This group ROCKED!

Here's me just chillin' with the bat before the action starts.  Little did I suspect the amazing day I was about to have.  It's just like Carson's days before all the madness, chaos and scary violence!  Without, of course, the scary violence.  Otherwise it was totally like one of his days.

The AMAZING Carson Dudley work ID tag shirt with hand drawn pic of the Parts promo cover, courtesy of James Dart and daughter Jessica.

This is Adam.  I HOPE he's a vampire.  Oh, sure, he's holding that cross, but you know, to my credit, I can't really SEE it from where I'm standing.

Meet Mrs. O.!  I like to say it "Mrs. OH!!"  She's a 5th grade teacher from the Wenatchee area and she's READY TO ROCK!  All I can say is, your class is pretty lucky.  AND safe!  :)

Hmm... I don't like the way Abigail is looking at me.  I'm hoping we're teaming up against the forces of darkness, but judging from the way she's eying my bald head with that bat I'm not entirely convinced we're on the same side.  Oh well.  You want your partners to be cautious, right?

Ryan is amazing... great taste in authors ;) and an aspiring artist!  Check out his rendition of the Chris Caprile cover.  Watch out, Cap!  You've got competition...

Gotta love these socks on T.J.'s little guy.  They're the OFFICIAL Frankenstein's monster socks, in honor of the upcoming book 3 "Parts" for the Graveyard Shift Series, in which mad science runs amok.  Or, maybe, he just likes 'em.  You be the judge!

Last but definitely NOT least... look out Buffy, here comes "Jade the Vampire Slayer"!  Whoa.  This chick knows her vampire hunting.  I feel safer already.  :)  Go Jade!!  I'm right behind you!!

"Parts" 24/7 Slogan Contest Winner!

HUGE thanks to everyone who submitted slogans for this contest!  We had 18 creative, insightful, crazy, hilarious, brutal and often delightfully ludicrous slogans to pick from, and brother it was tough - they were all fabulous.  But the Parts Kickstarter Planning Team got down to it last night and picked a winner... hey, we had to, we can't use 'em all!

Drum roll please...

CONGRATULATIONS JAMES DART!!

James is the proud winner of the 24/7 Slogan Contest for Parts, Book 3 in the Graveyard Shift, the Adventures of Carson Dudley series!!  Here's the winning slogan:

"Fast service for those on the run!"

His tongue-in-cheek slogan will earn him a special place in the book's acknowledgements and will be slathered across all the 24/7 products soon to be featured in the Kickstarter Launch of Parts (October 17th, 2014), all available as backer reward!  The slogan will also see some play in the novel itself, as part of a minor plot line, and will most likely drop off the lips of Carson and some of the other characters.  Way to go, James!

If you didn't win it, don't fret... not only will there be MORE contests and creative opportunities to get involved with Parts, but some of the slogans were so good, they just might be cropping up in the book anyway.

I DO love to BITE into a good slogan...

24/7 Slogan Contest!

Calling all creative people with too much time on their hands who want to be in a book...

Here's your first chance to leave your mark on "Parts", book 3 in the series Graveyard Shift, the Adventures of Carson Dudley!

Everyone remember the 24/7 Mini-Mart?  Well... it needs a SLOGAN!  And that slogan will be IN THE BOOK!  Plus, it'll be slathered over all the merchandise we're cranking out for the upcoming Kickstarter campaign.  And you'll probably get some recognition online, in social media, in the book credits and be made famous worldwide as someone who can think of good slogans.  Sweet!

So whip out your creative-and-clever-hat and serve me up something I can use.  Slogans should be one sentence and need to be both funny and tongue-in-cheek references to the Graveyard Shift series.  Something like "Come on in for your next bite!" works well.  Remember, it's a catch phrase for a mini-mart AND a monster-whacking hideout.  Let the creative dogs of war loose and go for it.

You can leave your entries here in the comments or post them on my Facebook author's Page.

Good luck!

Carson Dudley Lives

Wow.

I get goosebumps looking at these pictures.

We did phase one of the promo video last night at the infamous Topp Stop Mini-Mart in Toppenish, WA (HUGE thanks to owner Farren Young - you rock, dog... and I hope I know you well enough to call you "dog").  The equally infamous David Goehner, my ace marketing and PR dude, manned the cam and directed.

There were two hits to the night:  first was Tim Lantrip, pictured here, who showed up dressed as Carson Dudley!!!  Whoa.  Swank.  Can you say BOOYAH!! (to quote the man himself).

Equally compelling and filling my head with FABULOUS new plot directions was Steve Schnellman, who drove up in his absolutely boss monster hunting ride!  This black beauty is the bomb... complete with baseball bat, hemi and sunroof for "flailing at bad guys"!!!!  I want this man to adopt me and take me on the road with him to beat down monsters.  Seriously.

THEN... Steve off-handedly drops the remark "Heh heh... like Carson and his Grandpappy".

THEN... It hit me like a shotgun blast does a zombie (I don't know that that's true, but it sounds compelling)!  Carson's "Grandpappy?"  He's got a Granny... what ever happened to...

THEN... I told myself "Enough!!  Don't spoil it for the readers!"  Suffice it to say, there's a strong possibility you'll be hearing the words "black hemi monster hunting car" and "Grandpa Dudley" again soon before the series is over.  Odin's Beard!!

Huge thanks again to Farren and Topp Stop (and the wonderfully accomodating REAL clerks!) and Tim and Steve and Charter and Cole and everyone who turned out to help.  Batter up... WAY up!!

Better stop now.  I think I'm getting a little teary.

p..s Stay tuned for the pre-release preview of the Kickstarter "Parts:  Graveyard Shift, the Adventures of Carson Dudley Book 3" campaign due out September 15th!

p.s.s. Here's a snippet of teaser for MORE Carson Dudley action!!  Stay tuned for more...

Had a great time at Hastings Bookstore in Tri-Cities, WA this weekend past!  Met some great people, like Chris, Tim and Denise and the staff was tops - HUGE thanks to Sadie, Sarah and especially Angela... er... "Angelica" ;).  If you get the chance, stop by.  Their store is jack full of geeky, nerdy goodness.  Superheroes, movies, music, books, zombie paraphernalia (I love that word), bacon paraphernalia (good enough to use it twice) and more.  Big thanks to fellow author Linda Estela for getting me hooked up with them and to my fam for the company and enthusiasm.  :)  Thanks guys!
